Slavery and inequality were both widespread during the 1800s. I am aware of the change from the 1800s to now, but I was a bit curious on how it was changed. After watching the movie, “Lincoln”, I became aware of the “13th Amendment”. I became very curious on how it worked, who wrote it, and when it was passed, so I decided to research and do my National History Day project with it as my topic. It might seem “boring” to others, but for me, the 13th Amendment was one of the most important and greatest change that happened to the American history.
I conducted my research through knowing what my topic is and researching more about it. Secondly, knowing what my primary and secondary sources are. By knowing these, it became a lot easier for me to organize and put all my sources together. Third, I took my time wisely to do research. I also did a project timeline to know what I would do each day. I would make sure to add even little words or sentences to my project per day to finish it faster and easily. Lastly, I searched the internet for great sites I could take information from. Since, I am using the internet almost every day; I got almost all of my sources from the internet and just took note of the sites precisely.
I created my project using weebly.com. At first I was hesitant to do my project by doing a website, because I thought it would take a lot of time and work. But when I actually did it and went to weebly.com, I found at that it was really easier to do a website than to do it on a 3 fold cardboard and paste everything on it. It did not require much work, because almost all the outline was already there and also the themes. This really helped me a lot, because, first, it was not messy, and second, you could just add all your information and just type it directly on the website you created.
My topic fits the theme “Turning Points in History” because the 13th amendment really is a turning point in history. I believe without it being written, our lives would be a lot different now. The 13th Amendment changed how Americans view African-Americans. It also stopped slavery here in America. With all the research I’ve done, I really believe that the 13th Amendment was really a turning point in history.
